At my 37 week appointment, we found out through ultrasound that our little guy was breech. He was basically laying right under my ribs with his head on my upper right side and going across and his feet in my lower left side. So we scheduled to do a version (flipping the baby) and if that went well then I would be induced the 22nd (my due date) and if it wasn't successful then we would have to do a c section.
I was very nervous about the version as I had heard it can be pretty painful, you have to have an epidural and you have to be admitted to the hospital as there is a possibility if he reacted poorly they would have to do an emergency c-section.
So we scheduled for September 8. Nathan had some big exams that day but would be done by noon and my version was scheduled for 3. I couldn't eat 8 hours before due to the possibility of having an emergency c-section which I think is straight up cruel for a 38 week pregnant lady but I followed orders and ate a huge breakfast that morning to compensate.
Well at 9am on September 8th I was doing the dishes and all of a sudden I felt a sharp pain and then a sudden gush of warm water. I immediately ran to the bathroom with my curious 2 year old right behind. I was freaking out and it was taking a minute to sink in that my water had just broke. I asked my sweet two year old to go to the kitchen and get mommy's phone so I could call some people. I figured it was a long shot but boy did my little girl pull through!
I was panicking at this point because Nathan was in a test til noon and I had no way of reaching him. He had also taken my car with the car seats in it that morning because I didn't need it and he would be back after his test to pick me up for the version so I didn't need it that day. So I called my mom freaking out and as the voice of calm reason she said call your OB and then call one of your neighbors to take you to the hospital. So I called my OB and they said go to triage immediately. I then called my sweet neighbor Rachel who was only 5 minutes away and would take Emerie and I to the hospital. I quickly packed for Emerie and finished my hospital bag and we were on our way. Rachel also knew to call one of our other neighbors and fellow MD/PhDs to go find Nathan.
Anyway, to make this long story a little shorter Nathan was miraculously found and made it while I was still in triage (the hospital and his medical campus are like 2 minutes apart). We made it there at 10am and were immediately admitted and taken back to do an emergency c-section. There was no possibility of doing a version now since I had no fluid and they didn't want the umbilical cord to head down the birth canal.
I was freaking out and with the help of a priesthood blessing and several prayers I was able to remain pretty calm while getting my spinal block and during the operation. Lucas was born at 12:40 pm and at two weeks early he weighed 8lbs 4oz and was 21.5in long. My doctor said a version may have not even worked because he was so big and he was really wedged up under my ribs (which explained A LOT of my pain)! He could have been like 10lbs at 40 weeks! Yikes!
After that, it was pretty chill. I got sewed up (which still freaks me out especially with my brothers description of what happens during a c-section) and we spent 5 days in the hospital. He had a little jaundice so that's why we had to stay the extra day but it worked out as my mom couldn't come until Saturday so the day she came was the day we finally were discharged.
Emerie got to visit couple times and she did really well and has since been a great sister. She was very well taken care of which is all thanks to wonderful friends and neighbors who were quick to take action and make a plan for Emerie as our plans had quickly changed. She was happy and probably was in heaven with all the kids she got to play with.
So while he surprised us at a really inoperatune time, everything turned out just fine and I'm quite happy I didn't have to be horribly uncomfortable for two more weeks! I really love my little family of four and couldn't be happier!
Holy SMOKES, what a story! I'm glad that everyone was okay in the end. I can't believe he was 2 weeks early and still so big. I guess if you ask him, he wasn't early... he was done cooking and right on time. He was ready.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! He's beautiful!
